Mason Community Players is a member of both ACT of Greater Cincinnati, Inc. and the Ohio Community Theatre Association. Both theatre organizations recognize excellence within member theatres in various ways.

For ACT of Greater Cincinnati, with the agreement of each director, MCP invites adjudicators from ACT to view the show, give feedback and nominate individuals for an Orchid Award. Two or more nominations from the three adjudicators who see each show results in an Orchid Award. All ACT member groups can be adjudicated and many take advantage of this process for recognizing the work of their members and the group in general and as an avenue for improving the quality of future productions through the adjudicators' comments.
ACT has changed its categories over the years. You might notice in recent years the title "Excellence in Musical Theater Performance" and in earlier years "Excellence in Acting in a Musical" and "Excellence in Vocal Performance." Whether to keep the elements of performance together or treat them separately has been a long-standing discussion within ACT. Most member theatres believe that an award should only be given if an individual's performance is judged based on a complete and whole presentation.

OCTA offers theatres the opportunity to excerpt a 40-minute portion of a production and receive recognition for excellence shown during those excerpts and the possibility to be invited to showcase at the annual State Conference held each Labor Day Weekend. Also, member theatres can submit costume designs, lighting designs, set designs, newsletters, web sites and/or set up lobby displays to be adjudicated and be eligible for recognition. The group also recognizes one individual in each region with the Spirit of Community Theatre Award each year and welcomes members annually to their Hall of Fame.

Mason Players was also extremely proud that three of our members were given special recognition this year …

Peyton Hahn received a Rising Star Award honoring those whose dedication to community theatre is evident early in their association with a group. The award was created to acknowledge that the number of years of service does not affect the quality of the service. Outstanding service can be evident, and often is, among the youthful and those who have returned to theatre after a long hiatus. Since Peyton joined MCP in 2012, while still a student, he has given countless hours toward the success of the group. He was instrumental in ensuring the financial health of the group as chair of the Finance Committee, and Peyton serves on the Board of Directors, currently as Vice-President. Peyton was also instrumental in encouraging ACT Cincinnati to institute this award to honor the dedication of his peers. Eight others were named Rising Stars with him, and he can take pride in knowing they received accolades because of his commitment. MCP is proud to have him be recognized throughout the region as a “Rising Star.”

Perry Gary was awarded the Ohio Community Theatre Association’s Spirit of Community Theatre Award. This award is to recognize individuals within a region of OCTA for their service to community theatre, as well as their positive influence on their member group, their region, and community theatre in general throughout the state. No one embodies being positive more than Perry. His dedication to the success of MCP is apparent in the hours he spends as chair of the Membership Committee, as a fundraising coordinator with Lebanon, Mason and Monroe Railroad, behind the stage in a myriad of ways and on stage as a performer. MCP is thrilled to let the whole state know that Perry brings us great joy as he gifts us with so much talent and hard work.

Laureen Catlin received the coveted Art Rouse Award from ACT Cincinnati. The Art Rouse Award is given annually in Art's memory to a member from an ACT Theatre to honor an individual who has shown exceptional commitment and dedication to community theatre. Laureen has been dedicated to the success of MCP for more than 35 years in a variety of capacities from administration to strike. She joins a long list of honorees who have dedicated countless years toward community theatre in the Cincinnati area.

Congratulations to the cast of The Foreigner who performed an excerpt of the show during the OCTAfest this weekend. MCP is very proud to have them represent the quality work that our group provides to Mason and the surrounding area.

Mason Players was also extremely proud that our own Rebecca McLaughlin received the coveted Roger Grooms Award from ACT Cincinnati at the ACT Banquet. The Roger Grooms Award is given annually in Roger's memory to a member from an ACT Theatre to honor an individual who has demonstrated dedication to raising the artistic quality of community theater production through active teaching and/or by demonstrating sustained excellence in the categories of directing, acting, choreography, musical or vocal direction. Becca is our resident research guru and has always promoted the need to teach the next generation of theatre members any "how to" that makes them a better contributor to the quality of a production and the growth of the theatre in general. There is no one more deserving!
