ACT Convention/OCTA Regional Begins June 20th

Each year, OCTA (Ohio Community Theatre Association) holds regional gatherings where member theatres from that region showcase an excerpt from one of the shows that the group has produced in the immediate past season. Those excerpts are adjudicated by three respondeers on the spot. Those responders not only give feedback, but determine which aspects of which excerpts deserve recognition of either Merit, Excellence or Outstanding and they award certificates for those. They also invite a certain number of excerpts based on the number of excerpts that present at regionals to showcase at the State Convention in September.

We are in Southwest Region. We have one of the largest conventions in the state. Fourteen theatre groups from this region will excerpt and MCP's The Foreigner will be one of those! With that many groups, at least three will be invited to go to the State Convention.

In the southwest region, there is the addition of an organized group of local theatres that has been in existence for many years ... ACT Cincinnati. OCTA and ACT work together to present the excerpts and ACT hosts a banquet on the Saturday of the big weekend where OCTA certificates for excerpts are awarded and groups that are invited to State are announced. It is also the event at which Orchid Awards are presented resulting from the adjudicators who come from ACT to see member shows and others are honored for long time service.

If you have never attended any part of the the ACT Convention/OCTAFest and you love theatre, you are really missing out!

For $15 you can see 14 great excerpts over three days.

This year's weekend is Thursday, June 20th, Friday, June 21st, and Saturday, June 22nd. The Foreigner will be presented at 8:15 PM on Friday, June 21st. There are no individual tickets for just one night. It is $15 no matter how many excerpts you see. It is a super deal! Plan to come Friday to support Darren and the cast and crew of MCP's show. Come a little early and see Beechmont's Over the Tavern. Stay after and see Fairfield Footlighters' Savannah Sipping Society and see Darren perform in Out of Sterno for Mariemont Players.

If you are free Thursday evening, there are three great excerpts that evening and seven great excerpts on Saturday. Come Saturday morning. Come Saturday afternoon. See both sessions!

The ACT Banquet is Saturday evening. There will be other MCP members there. Just want to let you know that you should indicate when registering all of the groups that you have worked with over the season. Whichever group you list first is the group whose table(s) you will be assigned to for dinner seating. You CAN decide to skip dinner and come to the Award portion of the evening, but you will not be allowed to join your group at the table. They will have seating around the outside of the ballroom for those who are not dining.

Here is the link that will get you the information you need if you are interested and will allow you to register either online or by mail:

Early Bird registration ends June 9th. After that date prices increase.

If you wish to attend the dinner, you will need to register by June 17th. You can still register for excerpts and awards up to the day of attendance.

Come join the fun! You will be glad that you did. MCP had 5 shows adjudicated during last season that would be eligible for Orchid Awards ... Red, White & Tuna, Man of La Mancha, The Foreigner, Sentimental Journey: A Salute to the USO, and The Visit. Come cheer everybody on!

MCP Banquet Honored Many

The MCP Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet held on January 12, 2019 was a great success. The Banquet celebrated the accomplishments of the 2018 season when MCP Lived the Dream with six productions and a special fundraising show. The productions included The Fantasticks, Enchanted April, the 2018 Gender Bender RevueRed, White & Tuna, Man of La Mancha, The Foreigner, and Sentimental Journey: A Salute to the USO.

Following a cocktail hour and dinner, the group held its annual meeting to elect the new members of the 2019 Board of Directors.

Those present then turned their attention to the Awards Ceremony. The evening was filled with recognition. Some of the "awards" honored the humor that filled the year, while many honored the dedication and commitment of the troupe's members. Among the humorous were the Bloody Smurfs given to those who draw blood in the service of their art and the MO-Trin Awards for those who injure themselves without spilling any of their life blood.

Awards for dedication included Magnet Mayhem, the Silver Service Awards, the Most Community Player Awards for each show, the Vice-President's Award, the President's Award, the Jason Holt Technician of the Year Award, the Terry Family Founder Award, the Dallas and Helen Bowyer Award and the Grace Campbell Award.

Throughout the evening, members who were honored with Orchid Award Nominations from ACT Cincinnati and those who received Orchid Awards were acknowledged through a slide show presentation. Another presentation highlighted each of the productions throughout the year with projected photos.

The group once again honored Rebecca McLaughlin as the recipient of one of the coveted awards from ACT Cincinnati, the Roger Grooms Award. The Award is given annually in Roger's memory to a member from an ACT Theatre to honor an individual who has demonstrated dedication to raising the artistic quality of community theater production through active teaching and/or by demonstrating sustained excellence in the categories of directing, acting, choreography, musical or vocal direction. Becca is our resident research guru and has always promoted the need to teach the next generation of theatre members any "how to" that makes them a better contributor to the quality of a production and the growth of the theatre in general. There is no one more deserving! Matt Lisa challenged everyone to get their tickets to this year's ACT Banquet held the third weekend of June to witness Becca present the award to this year's honoree.

There were also 12 winners of door prizes ... superb themed baskets filled with many items chosen by the evening's presenters. And the evening wrapped up with dancing!
