Meet Members of the  Above the Sand  Cast

As is our tradition,  McPost  will highlight cast members. This time from our summer musical,  Above the Sand.
Five veteran performers from MCP will be taking on the roles of the gentlemen in the show. Steve Catlin, Jay Fultz, Joel Lind, Rich Rudolph, and Ray Smith will be a part of the ensemble. Steve will portray Mr. Tate, Jay will portray the General, and Rich will portray Octave Chanute, as well. Listing all of their theatre credits for both MCP and other troupes would be impossible in the space available, so we will publish just a few.
Steve has been a member of MCP since the age of five. Often cast because of his tenor voice, he has been Sir Harry in Once Upon a Mattress, Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof, and Lord Farquaad in Shrek. He also has a knack for the comedic, appearing as the lead in Dr. Evil and the Basket of Kittens, as Bernard in Boeing, Boeing, and as Jack Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest.  He has been known to grace the stage in many musical revues, as well.
Jay Fultz recently directed the highly successful Nunsense and appeared as the Reverend Mother in its companion Nunsense A-men. Jay has been with the troupe since 2005 and was one of the Orchid Award winning trio of actors noted for their humorous portrayal of dozens of characters in the Tuna Series. He was a cast member in musicals, including The Sound of Music, Imagine! Mason, and Mamma Mia!, also portraying Lazar Wolf in Fiddler on the Roof and Jacob in Joseph. He is also no stranger to musical revues or plays. He has had featured roles in The Curious Savage, The Foreigner, and Enchanted April  and most recently took in multiple characters in  The Dining Room . Jay has also appeared many times with Lebanon Theatre Company. He currently serves on the MCP Board.
Since 2008, Joel Lind has called MCP home. This experienced actor of numerous productions with nearly every troupe in the Cincinnati area is a character actor of renown who has received many acting awards. With MCP, he has appeared in 20 productions. Just some of his credits are Harry the Horse in Guys and Dolls, the Wizard in Once Upon a Mattress, the Judge in A Few Good Men, Candy in Of Mice and Men, Scrooge in Inspecting Carol, and The Actor in The Fantasticks. He, too, appeared as multiple characters in The Dining Room. Joel has served on the MCP Board.
Rich Rudolph has 21 years of service with MCP. You are much more likely to find him behind the stage building something or serving as a technical director. He has appeared on occasion and is known for winning awards without uttering a line; such as when he portrayed Horney in Stalag 17 or when he replaced another actor for an excerpt of The Girls in the Garden Club. He did make other stage appearances in The Music Man ’98, Our Town, A Grand Night for Singing, and 42nd Street. Rich is that person who you can count on to lend a hand when it is most needed.
Ray Smith has 18 years of service with MCP. He has helped with set construction, ushering, and box office. He is likely to show up to help with construction or strike or moving items from one storage to another, even if he has had nothing to do with the particular production in need. Ray first appeared with the troupe in A Grand Night for Singing ’05. He followed that with appearances in My Fair Lady and in The David Ives Festival in “Mere Mortals” and “The Philadelphia.” Ray’s signature appearance for MCP was as Felix Unger in The Odd Couple. Ray is also a mainstay of fundraisers.
For the list of the entire cast and their roles, visit our web site for all the details HERE. Above the Sand will be performed July 21, 22, 27, 28, and 29 at 8:00 PM and July 23 at 2:00 PM in the Mason Community Playhouse. Tickets are available ... use the link in the NEXT ON STAGE section.

Auditions for  Gender Bender 5.0  Announced

Director/Producer Peyton Hahn and Musical Director Jon Scheiding are excited to announce auditions for the fifth, and final, annual Gender Bender Revue! This year’s Gender Bender 5.0 will cap off Mason Community Players' 50th season, paying homage to MCP’s history with the non-traditional Gender Bender twist!
Auditioners should prepare 1-2 minutes of a musical theatre song that showcases their abilities. Auditioners do not need to audition with a gender-bent song, just sing whatever best displays your vocal style and range.
Those interested in being a part of the cast are encouraged to submit their auditions digitally by e-mailing their video audition (preferably via a YouTube link). Click here to send an e-mail. Also, please complete the sign-up form. You can access the form by clicking here. Digital auditions are due by 11:59pm on July 21st. All submissions will receive a confirmation email with 48 hours.
For those who prefer to audition in person, auditions will be held on July 22nd from 2-5pm at the Playhouse, 5529 Mason Road. Please sign up for an audition spot by clicking here. Walk-ins are welcome, but signing up ahead is encouraged.
All are also welcome to audition via MCP’s Karaoke Party on July 8th between 7-9pm (also at the Playhouse). Peyton and Jon will be in attendance - no need to sign up for any time slot. Show up and show them what you’ve got!
Gender Bender 5.0 performances are October 27th–29th and November 3rd–4th. The production team will do their best to be flexible with rehearsal times to accommodate as many performers as possible, however conflicts during tech week (after October 21st) are discouraged.

Parking Fundraisers!
Volunteers Are Needed!

There are two dates next weekend when volunteers are needed for Home-A-Rama parking ... Saturday, June 24th, and Sunday, June 25th. This year, the event is in Newport, Kentucky. There are two shifts on each date. The early shift is from 11am to 4pm and the late shift is from 3:30pm to 8pm.
There is still a need for 5 people in the early shift and 4 people in the second shift for Saturday. There is still a need for 6 people in the early shift and 7 people for the second shift on Sunday!
There are quite a few situations where a person can take a shift while sitting down for all or for a great part of the time. Just indicate in the notes when you sign up that you need to have a sit down job!
Please help MCP to fill the needs of this fundraiser! Sign up now, so that organizers know where more help is needed.

Volunteers Needed for  Red, Rhythm and Boom

The "other" parking gig is for the City of Mason's  Red, Rhythm and Boom  event. This celebration of Independence Day is held July 3rd each year, which falls on a Monday this time around. MCP directs parking in the William Mason High School parking lots and the lots at the Mason 4/5 and 5/6 Buildings.
We are present on site from 3pm to Midnight. We need 15 folks present throughout to make it all click. Since it is a work day for many, that makes the 3pm call difficult. But here is the scoop ...
Coordinator Laureen Catlin will take your help at any time for any amount of time.
If you are retired, off that day because it precedes the holiday, or can leave your place of employ a little early, please come to help for the 3pm time. If you are not someone who can stay until Midnight after arriving at 3pm, then just let Laureen know when you need to leave.
If you have to work that day, come when you can. Just let Laureen know when you can arrive. Even if you cannot be there until about 10pm, that is a help. As soon as the fireworks finish, it is like the last match at tennis and everyone leaves at once. Extra hands really are a help!
So, how do you let Laureen know? Just e-mail her by clicking here!

2024 Season Will Be By the Book

The shows and directors of the 2024 Season were announced at the Annual Picnic. MCP's Board of Directors chose the slate at its April meeting.
MCP will begin its next 50 years with:

Birthday Celebration is Tomorrow

Don't forget about the Quarterly Birthday Celebration tomorrow! Honor those whose birthdays fall in April, May, and June by dining at Taste of Belgium, 12071 Mason-Montgomery Road in Mason! Help raise funds for MCP while you do! You can dine any time between 8am and 9pm. No voucher necessary. Just mention to the server that you are there for Mason Community Players and a portion of the proceeds of your purchase will be directed to MCP.
If you wish to dine with the group of MCP members who will be celebrating together, the Membership Committee will be gathering at 6pm with cupcakes to share. All are welcome to join the party at that time!
But if it is a busy evening, think about stopping in for breakfast or lunch, MCP would really appreciate it!

50 Stories for 50 Years

Children and Animals Not Withstanding …
By Ray Lebowski

I had had minimal involvement with MCP prior to 1998, but knew several members from productions with other groups. In May 1998, I was rehearsing a production with a supposedly professional group, but was discharged under, at best, dubious circumstances that I won't get into here. In desperation for something, anything, to do, I called Linda Wilt (now Linda Geering), who was about to star as Marian in The Music Man, and told her the story.

Linda said seven words that started me on the road to recovery ... "Let me put Jim on the phone", meaning Jim Burton, her then husband and director of the show. I told Jim that I'd do anything, not necessarily be on stage, just to stay busy.  Jim's reply was the next part of my recovery ... "Can you be at rehearsal Tuesday night?"
So ... I wound up in the chorus, herding a bunch of kids around, and had a great time, despite the fact that I'm really, REALLY not into being around young children. MCP was an instant family for me, sometimes dysfunctional, often chaotic, but family.
Since then, I have been in a bunch of summer musicals, including Guys and Dolls, Seussical, and Damn Yankees, and our production of Inspecting Carol at Theatre 42.
I'm also directing our September production of Escanaba in da Moonlight, which I assure each and everyone of you is not demure and lady-like. "It's a great script that I hope to not mess up too badly."
ED NOTE: Below are photos depicting some of the "faces" of Ray from Dolls & Yankees & Carol. And we couldn't resist showing him with his favorite castmates, the children of Whoville in Seussical.

MCP's Southwest Regional Excerpt Receives Recognition

MCP took a cutting from last summer's  Nunsense to the OCTA Southwest Regional yesterday, June 17th. Participants have a window of 45 minutes in which to set up, perform, and strike the excerpted portion of a show they have produced in the past season. The members who made it all possible are listed in the  EXPRESSING GRATITUDE ...  section above.
Three theatre troupes and one alternate were invited to bring their excerpts to the OCTA State Convention in September. MCP was not among those. But ... the talents of those involved in the excerpt did not go unnoticed.
The MonkEES Band of Pete Padolik, John Gardlik, and Bill Pohl received Merit for Orchestral Performance, while Julie Poux received Merit in Musical Theatre Performance for her portrayal of Reverend Mother Mary Regina.
Wes Ledyard received Excellence in Puppet Design for her creation of Sr. Mary Annette. And, in a most unusual, but well-deserved recognition, Kelley Flaugher was awarded Excellence in Musical Theatre Duet, with herself, as both Sr. Amnesia and Sr. Mary Annette.
The Little Sisters of Hoboken, the MonkEES Band, Jay Fultz, Stephanie Dalsfoist and their team of helpers did us proud!
MCP members involved in the excerpts of other troupes were also among those recognized by the responders for the weekend. Joel Lind received Merit in Acting for CenterStage's  Laramie Project: Ten Year's Later  and Kiya Fix received Excellence in Directing for Loveland Stage Company's  Twelfth Night.

OCTA State Conference Is Fun!

It has been a while since the Southwest Region of OCTA, which is MCP's region, has hosted the State Conference. It is a whirlwind weekend of many aspects of theatre. There are the excerpts that have been invited from across the state. There are workshops. There is networking. There are evening activities and late night games. There is an annual Ball with costuming and dancing. There are weekend long challenges. It is a very immersive experience. This year it is being held at the Eastgate Holiday Inn. Participants from across the state will attend. They will be booking hotel rooms to spend the weekend. Since the Conference is close by Southwest theatre members have the choice to book a room or travel back and forth from home to the weekend events. Though many of us live close enough to travel back and forth, booking a hotel room makes a lot of sense and helps OCTA to fulfill its room commitment. There are late night activities and parties to attend after midnight. Driving home afterwards might not be the best choice, and who wants to miss all that fun?
Consider staying one, two or three nights. Make reservations here!
Be sure to change the dates, if you are not staying the whole weekend!

This newsletter will be sent to you each Sunday evening. It is the hope of the leadership of MCP that this will be an easy communication for you to refer to throughout that week and that you will not have as many messages from the group in your inbox over the course of the week.
